23 June 2019

Buy a picture is not an easy task, especially for those who do it for the first time. Nowadays, you can buy a painting almost everywhere: in an art salon or gallery, at an exhibition, on the street, in an Internet gallery, in a mall and even in an office (many artists arrange an exhibition - selling their paintings in banks, offices, etc. ).

There are many articles and tips on how to buy a painting, and most of the recommendations come down to a profitable investment of money and the future increase of your capital. But this is really important only for collectors and people doing business in the field of art. As a rule, they allocate a separate storage room with their microclimate for their collection, since the paintings do not like temperature changes, dry or humid air, and direct sunlight.

WHAT DOES IT REALLY HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION WHEN BUYING A PICTURE?

  1. The most important guideline when buying a painting is your sensual perception, and not the taste of your designer, friend or art historian. The picture just has to please you and please you. Since most of the time you will contemplate it in your interior, and if you don’t like the picture, then it will subconsciously annoy you, and you will feel uncomfortable and uncomfortable in such a room. Agree, it doesn’t matter how much the painting is worth, who wrote it, in what technique and in what century it all loses all meaning. But if the picture is like and also fits well into the interior, then looking at it, you will experience a lot of positive emotions and again it does not matter how much it costs, who wrote it ...
  2. According to experts, this rule is just as important when buying paintings for the purpose of investing money, since not every collector can tolerate a hated picture in the house and wait for it to bring profit.
  3. Another important aspect when buying paintings is the quality of the soil and oil in the painting. To check there are a few simple rules. Carefully inspect the surface of the picture, it should not be chipped paint.
  4. Turn the picture upside down; there should be no cracks and small pores on the canvas - a sign of poor-quality soil.
  5. Do not be afraid of paintings painted on factory primed canvas with the addition of synthetics. Such paintings are more durable and less susceptible to the influence of humidity and temperature changes and have a sufficiently high quality soil.
  6. The picture should not be holes, patches and loss of the paint layer.
  7. Zalomy canvas and craquelure can be found, if you light the picture from the back side with a lamp or flashlight.
  8. Sometimes artists buy linen canvas with knots, then they are shaved off and re-coated with primer. If you do this on clothes, then a hole will appear in this place soon enough, with painting the situation is about the same. For an inexperienced buyer it is quite difficult to determine this copyright know-how If you see the canvas unevenness on the front side of the painting, then look at this place from the back side, if white ground appeared in this place, then most likely the author cut the knots.
  9. Look at the picture frame, if it is crooked or propeller, then ask the artist to replace it.
  10. It would not be superfluous to check the diagonal of the picture, if the difference between them is from 1 cm and more (for small pictures from 0.5 cm), ask the artist to drag the picture, since you cannot make a frame with such a picture.
  11. If the purchased picture has sagged, do not be alarmed, this is a sign of an undiluted stretcher, drafts or humidity drops in the room, and not the quality of the canvas or the painting. You just need to drag the canvas (entrust it to the workshop in which you ordered the baguette) or pick up the wedges on the stretcher (if any).
  12. If you buy a picture in the gallery, do not hesitate to ask questions, even non-professional ones. First, you can understand the professionalism of the gallery owner. Secondly, if you realize that you are a professional, you can get good advice in choosing a painting.

In Nikolska Gallery you will find not only the author's work, but expert advice.
