Completion of the exhibition project "POP UP MUSEUM"
24 September 2025

After completing a seven-year cycle at the NEO GEO business center, the “POP UP MUSEUM” project — an independent platform for researching and presenting 21st-century Russian contemporary art — has concluded its activities.

The project held a key position in the city’s cultural landscape, occupying 2,000 sq. m and offering the public a representative panorama of artistic practices: from the legacy of socialist realism, realism, and impressionism to current movements in figuration, avant-garde, abstraction, sculpture, performance, and video art. Its curatorial strategy was aimed at deconstructing the elitism of the artistic process, including through the policy of free admission, ensuring maximum accessibility.

The project was initiated by Nikolskaya Gallery and partnered with the real estate investment fund STONE HEDGE.

The “POP UP MUSEUM” emerged as a critically important institution at a time when the number of venues known to a broad, not only professional, audience was shrinking. The project successfully integrated art into the public space of a business and residential environment, fulfilling both educational and community-building functions. In addition to its exhibition program, the platform implemented an educational component: original workshops, lectures by leading art historians and designers, and curator-led tours.

Project results (2017–2025):

  • Over 50 curatorial projects

  • More than 1,800 works of art

  • Representation of over 500 artists

  • 6 exhibition halls with a total area of 2,000 sq.m.

The POP UP MUSEUM team expresses its gratitude to the NEO GEO business center for the opportunity, to the artists for their bold statements, to the visitors for their openness to dialogue, and to the entire project team for their professionalism and dedication.

Thanks to these combined efforts, the museum established itself as a significant horizontal platform that brought together creators and audiences, contributing to the development of an inclusive cultural environment.

The project’s further focus shifts toward international exhibition collaborations and participation in contemporary art fairs. The current program and project archive are available online at nikolskayagallery.com.
